God said, let there be light; and there was light. And the Pope answered, let there be solar energy; and there was solar energy. Source: Red Green & Blue
The current Pope, Benedict XVI, sometimes gets labeled as the "green" Pope. He has been emphasizing the importance of defending "God's work" and therefore the need to protect the environment. The Vatican was already leading the way by becoming the first carbon neutral state, offsetting its carbon footprint by placing solar panels on the roof of its papal audience hall in Vatican city. But the Pope seems unstoppable and has now taken the next step in being the most sustainable Pope ever as he ordered a hybrid Popemobile. And although it will also have a "normal" engine for emergency situations, and it can only go for 16 miles, it is a good start and still takes the pope 8 times around Vatican City!
