At my cousin's wedding one of my favorite aunts proudly showed me her new boots. They were indeed cool but unfortunately, according to my aunt, uncomfortable to wear. After a closer look we discovered they would probably be more convenient when she would wear the right shoe on her right foot and the left shoe on her left foot.
This moment clearly came to mind when I heard about the initiative of the organisation Fashion Revolution to wear your clothes inside out on 24th April.
Fashion Revolution initiative was set up after the horrendous factory accident last year on 24th April in Rana Plaza, Bangladesh, and wants to
use the power of fashion to be a catalyst for change and reconnect the broken links in the supply chain. At the moment of purchase, most of us are unaware of the processes and impacts involved in the creation of a garment. We need to reconnect through a positive narrative, to understand that we aren’t just purchasing a garment or accessory, but a whole chain of value and relationships.
On Thursday 24 April 2014, the first Fashion Revolution Day, we will ask people to wear their clothes inside out because we want people to change the way they look at the clothes they wear. Be curious.
I will definitely join this initiative tomorrow and -being a blood-relative of my aunt- it is not the first time I wear my clothes inside out. But this time it will be intentional and for a good cause. I will spend the rest of today convincing my children to wear their school uniform inside out as well, raising awareness for these global issues should start at an early age! And with a small bribe I am sure they are also willing to wear their shoes on the wrong foot.
