Coming Saturday at 8.30pm we will be celebrating Earth Hour again. Many initiatives have already started, like the "Walk to Mali" initiative run by Earth Hour Nigeria. A trip of 3,404km from Nigeria to Mali will lead 12 earth Hour champions through Nigeria, Mail, Niger, Cot d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo and Benin. Activities during the walk have been advocacy visits, community vulnerability mapping, community outreach, and capacity building. The campaign will distribute 3,000 solar lights and make reach 1,500 children, 7 humanitarian camps, 5 Landmarks, 14 Local communities, 6 UNESCO Heritage sites and 7 local radio stations!
But the majority of activities will take place this Saturday evening. My favorite, by far, is the initiative in French Polynesia. In the main stadium in Tahiti an acoustic concert will take place. The seats of the concert can (only!) be paid with recyclable waste. Even though I can probably collect enough recyclable waste in our house to buy tickets for our whole street, I will drop it at a local collection point: better for the environment than flying my waste and me to Tahiti. Even though the thought is very appealing!
